Shakespeare's works form an integral part of any literature and theatre studies program and our cultural sphere is unimaginable without repeated references to recognizable Shakespearean lines.
But furthermore, Shakespeare's works offer both a lens through which to study performance masterpieces across different times and cultures as well as a language that embeds a unique performance tradition within itself.
The aim of this course is manifold:
first, to familiarize students with the performance of Shakespearean language, secondly, to analyze different interpretations of Shakespeare in performance with a particular focus on language and finally, to strengthen the student's analytical use of the English language in writing. Particular emphasis will be on Shakespeare's Macbeth but we will also refer to a number of other plays as well.
Rather than approaching Shakespeare from a literary studies or historical perspective, the focus will be on Shakespeare in contemporary performance.
